It isn't really something you have to think about by maximising the effect of different builds, and I don't think it adds anything to the game overall. You get incremental increases to health and damage that make the next run easier, and then just repeat exactly the same thing. Where it falls down IMO is the fact there isn't any variety in the action, the environment or in the music (as pumping as that track might be, it gets repetitive very quickly) and there's no strategic depth behind the rogue-like elements. Your dodge move is nice albeit nothing game-changing. The fact that enemies can trigger traps is neat, and the various forms in which they attack are good. Though I don't find it to be particularly practical in use.Īlso, the colour switching aspect provides variety and a reason to pay attention to enemy types. There are things that I think are done well: the weapons have some interesting secondary effects, such as doing a "mega" blast when you've emptied the current clip.
